Nebraska Safe Haven Law Part II

We can't get this law changed quick enough. CNN has now flown in a reporter and done a video piece which you can view here. The latest incident, a father flew his son in from Miami and left him here.

Anyone, have any thoughts? It is sad that there are people in need of help out there and they feel so desperate or don't feel like they have any other options. Very sad.

I'll just be glad when this entire fiasco is over.

I didn't know much about the safe-haven laws when this all started (much less that NE was the last to get one) but I think it provides a valuable service to those mothers/families that are ill-equipped to raise a child.

As a side note, I think that the proposed 3 day age limit is too short. I think a more reasonable limit would be 1 month to 1 year. This would give the mother/family time to adjust and see if they can make everything work. If they can not, then they still have the option to turn it over to the state without prosecution.

I had heard a bit on the news about this the other day, indicating that they were going to try to adjust the law so infants can be dropped off, but not older children. One of the saddest parts was when they talked about some of the older kids who've been dropped off. Some, they said, are quiet, distant, but others start pleading with their parent(s) that they'll be good. How sad! What those kids have to live with the rest of their lives!
